TWD: Peanut Butter and Oatmeal Cookies

Our project for this week's Tuesdays with Dorie was the Chunky Peanut Butter and Oatmeal Chocolate Chipsters, on page 73 of "the book." Thank you to Stefany of Proceed with Caution for choosing this recipe!

I made a few changes to the recipe, reducing the white sugar by 1/2 cup, increasing the salt to 1/2 teaspoon, reducing nutmeg to 1/8 teaspoon, and substituting some raisins and chopped peanuts for some of the chocolate chips. As I only had smooth, natural peanut butter on hand, I ended up "mixing my own" from a combination of 2/3 cup smooth natural peanut butter, about 2/3 cup chopped peanuts, and 1 tablespoon of vegetable shortening. It all worked just fine!

The verdict? We liked them but were not crazy about them. We both agreed we'd rather have either a plain peanut butter cookie or an oatmeal-raisin-spice cookie. Tomorrow the rest of them go into work and I'm sure they will be gone fast!

Great looking cookies.

Thanks for showing a clueless, scale using German how to measure a cup of peanutbutter. But I think it's much easier to weigh 258 g peanutbutter directly from the jar into the bowl ;)

They look great even though you weren't crazy about them. I loved them, but I've never met a cookie I didn't love. LOL

I'm sort of with you on the cookies - they were really good, but I like my favorite pb cookie, oatmeal cookie, and cc cookie better. Yours look beautiful, and kudos on making your own natural "unnatural" pb!

There was so much going on in these cookies, I kind of agree: I'd like an oatmeal cookie or a peanut butter cookie or a chocolate chip cookie. Actually, make those "ands" instead of "ors". :)

I thought about increasing the salt in mine, but didn't. I really liked my final product, but I left out the cinnamon, so my cookies didn't seem to have as much of an identity crisis. =)

Thanks, everyone! Ulrike, those Wonder-Cups are great for measuring peanut butter, molasses, vegetable shortening and other sticky, gooey items. You're right, though, weighing is the best!

I forgot to bring the cookies into work on Wednesday. Hm, Freudian slip perhaps! I don't work again until Friday, I wonder if any will be left!

Your cookies look great ~ even though they aren't your favorites. Cinnamon and chocolate together is not my favorite but I didn't mind it in this cookies for some reason.

I also like the measuring cup that you have measured out your peanut butter ~ I will ahve to look for one of those.

I like how nicely round and uniform your cookies look. I reduced the sugar too. That measuring cup you have for the peanut butter looks so cool, I wish I knew where to buy one of those.

Yup, I have to agree. I'd rather have a pure version of either cookie. Ah well.

Thanks for your post on my blog. I liked the chipsters, as did my colleagues: the cookies I took to work were gone in no time!

I agree... good to take to the office, lol. I like your substitutions though, I think that would have been at least better than the original.

Love that you went with some organic ingredients with these and going the extra mile of "making" peanut butter.
